In the old days when TV Guides were in that compact form (and much better), the Fall Preview was always THE issue to wait for each September. And one of my favorites segments in that issue dealt with the changes for the returning shows.

Since FOX is out of the gate early because of the upcoming baseball playoffs, we'll get to see how they fine-tuned their returning series first. (With 'Prison Break', it looks like killing off a few characters should have been expected.)

So I think 'Bones' did a good job in tweaking their cast for the new season. Dropping that stodgy and somehwat boring boss at the Institute was the right thing to do, although I'm always sorry for the actors involved.

Bringing in somebody totally different like Dr. Camille Saroyan not only shakes up the dynamic of the group (aiieee! New boss! Possible old flame of Booth's?), but the actress, Tamara Taylor, is somebody that the camera loves. She really has a presence whether it's in the sleek labs of the Institute or out in the field in the midst of grisly body parts.

And as this possible old flame of Booth's, she throws a monkey wrench into the growing bond between Booth and Bones, to keep it from advancing too quickly for a TV series relationship.

But I'm especially glad the network suits kept the supporting trio of Zack, Hodgins, and Angela intact. Their characters were offbeat and inteesting and far too integral to sideline.

I liked the new boss, except for the fact that she looks so much like Angela. Even Bones and Booth look like they could be related. If it wasn't for Zack and Hodgins, I might feel like I was watching some kind of family drama.

I was hit and miss with Bones last season and FOX moved it around, which I always hate. Personally, I like Emily Deschanel's performance. The supporting cast is great and really the heart of the show. Angela, Zack, and Hodgins really center the Deschanel’s character. Their understanding and admiration for Bones brings out her best side at the right times. I actually think it’s Boreanaz who is the weak link. In portrayal of Booth is stodgy and over-acted and little more than an extension of his Angel character. Boreanaz has never been an acting powerhouse (look at early episodes of Buffy), but like Angel, the character of Booth doesn’t required much talent. I do think he has excellent chemistry with Deschanel. The addition of Tamara Taylor in a supporting role as to the head of forensics was a good turn. She’s an excellent actress as was evidenced in her beautiful portrayal of Debra in Diary of a Mad Black Woman. She also seemed to develop and interesting and fun rapport with the rest of cast. She should bring a lot to the series.

I'm a fan of Deschanel's acting. I think she does well with the ever-changing quirks they give her to work with.
I love the new boss shake-up. I think this dynamic is what was missing in the show, and I'm looking forward to a great season.

This season viewer is OK with Deschanel's performance. It was the writing that started her character on the wrong foot, but by the fourth episode it went on the right track. (i.e: it wasn't ED's idea to state that she is the only forensic anthropologist in the US, or beat down all the harmless barely suspects )
I am alsso very happy about Cam - she is intriguing, pretty, well performed. And she finally undercuts the too thick adoration of Bones by all the regulars of the show. It gets a bit tiresome.
And to answer your question about David Boreanaz, yes, he has.Besides that,I am happy that he gets more opportunities to showcase his nuanced performance - one of the reasons the premiere was so good. Two very different interactions with Cam and Bones, the priceless funny/serious wordless scene at the cemetery - and he gets to throttle a bad guy and say: "If you bite me...."Now, if only Fox can be convinced to spend its advertising dollars a bit more evenly , the ratings would reflect the quality of the shows (just compare the hype around Prison Break with Bones - and their respective ratings...

The premiere was great. It was the best episode so far because everything from the acting, writing, and new 'atmosphere' was done perfectly.

I think Bones is one of the best shows that is out right now. I'm hooked every week. The writers always have me on the edge of my seat. It is definetly a show that I will continue to watch every week and be really upset if it got cancelled.
